Agilent, Caliper Introduce LabChip Kit for DNA Fragment Analysis

Source: Agilent
Agilent Technologies Inc. (Palo Alto, CA) and Caliper Technologies Corp. (Mountain View, CA) have launched the DNA 500 LabChip kit for automated analysis of DNA fragments. The new kit, when coupled with with the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer, will enable life scientists to quickly and easily determine the size and concentration of DNA fragments, speeding the drug discovery process.

The DNA 500 LabChip kit, which is based on Caliper's microfluidic LabChip technology, is capable of making high-resolution size measurements of relatively small size DNA fragments (25–500 base pairs). The kit was designed primarily for the analysis of small polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products and restriction enzyme digests.

The new kit will have many potential applications in genomics and genetics research. For example, it can be used to detect genetic mutations that may be associated with particular diseases such as cancer. Scientists can use the kit to screen multiple samples using separation-based mutation detection methods—such as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)—that generate small DNA fragments, and quickly analyze and compare resulting data files.

Agilent and Caliper plan to introduce another LabChip kit for protein size analysis later this year. This kit will replace will be used for the analysis of a wide range of different protein samples generated by research labs and pharmaceutical production facilities.

Caliper Technologies Corp. designs, manufactures, and commercializes LabChip devices and systems that enable experiments that ordinarily require laboratories full of equipment and people to be conducted on a chip small enough to fit in the palm of a child's hand.

Agilent Technologies Inc. designs and manufactures test, measurement and monitoring instruments, systems and software, and semiconductor and optical components for communications, electronics, life sciences, and healthcare markets.
