By Genser Nir Mira, Goldstein Nyra, Guri Ben Ari Meital, Daniliuc Sharon, and Fiorentini David
Cryopreservation is crucial for long-term storage of cell-based products and advancing "off-the-shelf" cell therapies. Traditional methods often use toxic cryoprotective agents (CPAs) like DMSO, which can compromise cell quality and safety.
To meet regulatory demands, safer, well-defined cryopreservation solutions with lower CPA concentrations are needed. NutriFreez D5, a defined solution containing 5% DMSO, presents a viable alternative. This study examines its effectiveness in preserving human mesenchymal stem cells, pluripotent stem cells, and immune cells.
Current research aims to develop next-generation cryopreservation solutions, focusing on eliminating DMSO entirely and adopting non-toxic CPA alternatives, enhancing the safety and efficacy of cell-based therapies.
