The operating principle of the PYRO is extraordinary. A special microwave-transparent ceramic muffle furnace allows microwave energy to pass through and raise the temperature of silicon carbide heating elements inside. Porous ceramic honeycomb frits in the side of the walls of the muffle furnace allow a constant stream of air to pass over the crucibles. The combination of microwave "superheating" and high oxygen concentration from the air flow results in a dramatic reduction in ashing times.
A thermocouple located in close proximity to the silicon heating elements monitors the temperature inside the furnace. The thermocouple's signal is used as a feedback control mechanism to regulate microwave power and maintain the users selected ashing temperature.
The high efficiency coupling characteristics of the silicon carbide heating elements allows the use of standard metal or porcelain crucibles inside the microwave muffle furnace.

The Basic MLS-1200 PYRO Microwave Ashing System
The basic PYRO unit consists of three major components: an industrial-grade microwave unit, a special microwave muffle furnace, and a microprocessor control terminal.
The microwave unit was specifically designed from the ground up for industrial laboratory use. The system exterior, inner cavity, and door are constructed of solid steel. A 1200 Watt magnetron delivers 1000 Watts of microwave energy to the cavity for heating. Controlled operating temperatures of up to 1000°C can be reached. The exhaust system safely removes high temperature gases from the microwave system to a special exhaust hose assembly for venting into a fume hood or other suitable outlet.
The muffle furnace has a large heated work zone which accommodates up to eight 50mm O.D. crucibles. The strong microwave absorption of silicon carbide heating elements used in the muffle furnace yields an extremely fast heating rate. The furnace can go from room temperature to 900°C in only 50 minutes.
