The Jackson Laboratory
Established in 1929, The Jackson Laboratory is a not-for profit, independent research institution dedicated to studying genetic influences on biological processes and human disease. With over 1000 employees (including more than 100 Ph.D. level scientists), The Jackson Laboratory is world renowned for both breakthrough discovery research and for development and distribution of mouse models for research (i.e. JAX® Mice . As evidence of research excellence, The Jackson Laboratory is a designated NCI Cancer Center and has been since 1983.
OUR MISSION:
The mission of The Jackson Laboratory is to improve the quality of human life through discoveries arising from our own genetic research and by enabling the research and education of others. The Laboratory is committed to advancing worldwide research efforts by training the scientific community and by developing, using, and sharing genetic information, knowledge, and research tools, such as JAX® Mice .
JAX® Mice – Setting the gold standard for genetic purity: The Jackson Laboratory distributes over 2500 strains of laboratory mice, known as JAX® Mice. For over sixty years, the international research community has relied on The Jackson Laboratory to maintain "gold standard" foundation stocks of genetically defined inbred JAX® Mice strains (both commonly used and rare). These strains are used as biomedical research tools around the world and also serve as the background strains for several hundreds of genetically engineered strains, many available from The Jackson Laboratory.
JAX® GEMM Strains (Genetically Engineered and Mutant Mice): The Jackson Laboratory also serves as an international resource for laboratory mouse models. In this role, we continually develop, import, breed, characterize, cryopreserve and supply the world's broadest array of unique, specialty strains, called JAX® GEMM Strains. These strains include transgenics and mice with spontaneous, chemically induced, or targeted mutations (i.e., "knockouts").
LABORATORY MOUSE EXPERTISE:
For over seventy years, scientists at The Jackson Laboratory have been conducting mouse based biomedical research. As a result, we have accumulated a tremendous wealth of information related to husbandry, genetics, and biology associated with selecting and using laboratory mice in research. This extensive knowledge is shared with researchers around the world through our technical services staff, scientific presentations, Web-accessible databases , printed literature and publications, and educational programs.
YOUR COLLEAGUE & SUPPLIER:
As a premier research institution dedicated to sharing knowledge and resources to help advance biomedical research, The Jackson Laboratory uniquely provides: 1) the broadest available offering of mouse models for research; 2) unmatched technical knowledge related to using mouse models in research; and 3) mice that meet the highest standards of animal health and genetic purity.
