In general, IL-1 production is considered to be a result of inflammation in response to stimuli produced by infections, microbial endotoxins or inflammatory components of the immune system. In response to the stimuli there is a dramatic increase in the production of IL-1 by activated macrophages from various sources ( Alveolar, Kupffer cells etc) and peripheral neutrophils. Other cells also known to produce IL-1 include osteoblasts, monocytes keratinocytes, hepatocytes epithelium cells, Schwann cells, smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts and glia (oligodendroglia, astrocytes and microglia).

In view of this the plethora of biological activities is exemplified by the many different acronyms under which IL-1ß has been described.

IL-1a and IL-1ß are both synthesized as 31 kDa precursors that are subsequently cleaved into proteins with molecular weights of approximately 17,000.
