Acculab offers a fast, low-cost microbe identification service. After receiving the isolated samples of bacteria or yeast, the lab experts culture these samples on a standard medium and then extract the fatty acids from approximately 40 mg. of whole cell material.
The fatty acids extracted from a given sample are separated by gas chromatography, and a computer generated profile of fatty acids 9 to 20 carbons in length is compared, by a powerful pattern recognition program, to profiles of well over 2600 species and subspecies currently in the Sherlock Libraries. Within 48 to 72 hours after the lab receives the sample(s), the customer has a report on each that includes its fatty acid profile, and a listing of the best Library matches, along with an assigned statistical probability called a similarity index.
